June 1st, 2002...

That's right, the Amiga is back, and Forefront Technologies is proud to be a part of it.

After so many years of stagnation the "Classic" Amiga systems, though extremely advanced when introduced, are showing their age by today's computing standards. Many things have changed in the desktop computer market since the first Amigas hit the streets; the once competition has caught up, and in some cases, surpassed the Classic Amiga's abilities -- often by "borrowing" concepts and implementing them with a brute force approach driven by sheer horsepower.

The AmigaOne represents the first new Amiga system hardware in almost a decade and it appears to be worth the wait. Gone are outdated CPUs and Amiga-only expansion slots. A workhorse CPU and industry standards are a welcome change to bring the new Amiga into the limelight again.

Here's a quick look at the current specifications for the first AmigaOne motherboards:
    AmigaOneG3-SE
  • IBM PowerPC G3 600MHz CPU
  • 4 32 bit PCI slots
  • 1 AGP2X slot
  • 2 PC133 DIMM sockets (up to 2GB RAM)
  • 2 UDMA 100 IDE connectors
  • 10/100Mbps Ethernet
  • 2 USB connectors + 2 optional
  • Onboard Audio & 56K Modem
  • Floppy connector
  • Serial & Parallel ports
  • PS/2 Keyboard & Mouse ports
  • Open Firmware compatible BIOS with AmigaOS 4 extensions
Sounds like an aweful lot of horsepower. Don't worry, Amiga isn't about to go down the endless bloat road. The elegant and efficient AmigaOS (the heart of the Classic Amigas) is having a major overhaul to coincide with the AmigaOne release. AmigaOS 4.0* will be based on the same solid foundation as the previous versions of AmigaOS, but will be ported to run natively on the PowerPC processor. Additionally, it will receive many new features and enhancements to bring the operating system up to date with modern standards. The speed of this tight operating system on this high-powered hardware should be nothing short of phenomenal. Legacy applications (those for the M680x0 CPUs) will continue to run on the new hardware through the use of a JIT emulator.

* Forefront note: We were so excited to hear about the new Amiga, Forefront is developing the ATI Radeon video drivers which will be included in AmigaOS4. Read about it here.
